Jim

I am having problems with my computer. I wish to totally
remove everything and then reinstall XP. We are having
problems locating the book that came with the PC and
disks if there were any. How do you go about clearing
your hard drive and then reloading the OS (Window XP Home
Edition). The reason for this is there are all kinds of
adware and other nasties on my computer that make
everyday computing painful. I would like to start over
and update the security features on my PC so I would not
have to deal with these items in the future. Any help
would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Jim, visit my web site www.freelanceit.glowinternet.net Click on the Win XP
Faq button and take a look at question 7
What you actaully need to do is follow the instruction of question 7 to
reformat your hard drive. Once the drive has been reformatted windows will
continue to install.
Please note that the instruction i have directed you to are for a full
retail copy of xp, not an upgrade. If your pc came with recovery discs
instead of the full windows xp then you need to use the recovery disc to
install xp. You may need your pc manual for the recovery disc.
Any problems you can always email at the contact address on my website.

The easiest way is to run Windows setup and delete the
existing partion and then reinstall Windows on the
unpartitioned space. If you did not get any cd's with
your computer, your Windows setup files are likely
located on a special reserved partition. You should be
careful that when you run setup and get to the part about
choosing what partition you want to install on, that you
do not delete the wrong partition. The right partition
will most certainly be the largest one and is labeled as
drive c:. If you have further questions about what to do
without any Windows CD's, you should contact your
computer manufacturer directly. They will also likely
have information on their support website.

Here are some of my problems:
~MSN Internet logon keeps popping up
~Once on the internet, internet explorer window opens on
its own
~All kinds of special toolbars are added to my internet
windows
~Adware on my computer, not sure how it gets there
~Had problems with the Sasser worm.
~Cannot remove some programs using Add/Remove programs
because "Install.log" file could not be found

Thanks for your help.

Jim,

You need to scan your system for spyware and remove what
it detects. Go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download Ad-
Aware which is free. Install the program and at the main
screen, click on Check for updates. Complete the update
process and hit Start to scan your system. Once if
completes, you will end up at a results screen. If there
are not already check marks in front of all items, right-
click on any one of the check boxes and choose Select all
objects. Then hit next to quarantine the items. You
want to be sure that your Internet browser window is
closed before doing so. Repeat the process until the
scan no longer produces any results. If you get to a
point where it deletes everything but just a few items
that it won't delete, you should post a notice at
www.lavasoftsupport.com and they will walk you through
the process of removing the stubborns ones.

You should also know that your antivirus software only
deletes or quarantines viruses. It does not repair the
damage that it does. There are several variants of the
Sasser virus and so you should determine the exact name
or variant of the Sasser virus that you were infected
with and then go to your antivirus software companies
website and read the technical details on that virus so
that you know what damage it did and what repairs are
necessary if any.

Generaly speaking you get spyware from clicking on links
in spam email, links on websites operated by unscrupulous
people, and installing programs from the same. In other
words, this problem will continue unless you take steps
to be more careful where you click. If you go to
www.abcnews.com, you can be pretty confident that you
won't get spyware from them, but if you click on
www.joesfreesoftware.com, you can almost be you will. Be
careful where you click.

While your original thoughts of reinstalling Windows is
not the best choice for most people, it may or may not be
for you. It really depends on if you have valuable data
that you would potentially lose in the process and how
much time, effort, and/or money you are willing to spend
in the process. Regardless, you should make sure that
when you are all finished that you ALWAYS have ansivirus
software with current updates on your computer. Scanning
your system with a program like Ad-Aware will help get
rid of the spyware but the best way to keep it out of
your machine to begin with is to be careful where you
click.

Good Luck!

First step, which is essential: Locate the "disks if there were
any". As in: locate the Operating System installation files that
you are going to use to reinstall this system.

Depending upon who built your system they may be on a CD-ROM. Or
you may have a hidden folder on your hard drive containing the
setup files. That information may be available at the Web Site
of your system builder.
