how to turn off auto calendar feature

I want to type 1-3 (as in first through third grade) but it keeps getting
converted to Jan 3 (as in the calendar). Please help!

You will need to first type a hyphen and then your text/numbers. Like this:
'1-3

By entering the hyphen keeps the cell type as a text cell. This will solve
your problem.
