How to tell Which USB

I have a piece of HW that I want to connect to my XP notebook. It requires
USB 2.0. How can I tell which USB I have? It is a Dell laptop, about 1
year old.

In laptop most use a pcmci USB 2.0 card if you don't have

Does it actually require a USB 2? More than likely it only requires it to
reach full speed potential and is backward compatible to USB 1.1

My experience has been that when I plug a USB 2 device into my XP systems I
receive a warning via a message from the system tray but my device works
fine. True for both my notebook and desktop systems.

Yes ... you can use an Ext. Burner with USB 1.1 .... just a reduced
speed and efficiency. The one I have here works just fine with 1.1

Your manual should tell you! If not give Dell a call. It doesn't
cost anything. Because if you have it the next problem is have you
installed the USB2.0 drivers from SP1?
