How to stop a trial version from running

Working on a Mac in OS 10.3. I have a version of Word for OS X.

What's been happening is: when I double click on a Word doc, all of a sudden
the latest version launches and asks if I want to try it out.

How I can stop that from happening? Is there a "check for new version file"
file that I need to delete or disable?

This is a Mac-specific problem and you need to repost on a Mac group.
