How to share a scanner

Ron Shepherd

I would like to share a scanner, (which is set up on my host m/c. ) with the
other computer on the network. Both are running Wxp and all other aspects
(printing, file sharing, etc,) are working correctly. Thank you, Ron.

This question is posed over and over, and the answer remains the same.
Scanners are not practically networked like printers are. You need to be at
the scanner to input the documents so it is of little value to network it.
In a networked scenario you would go to the scanner, input th edocument, go
back to your computer, start the scan, go back to the scanner, remove the
document, go back to your computer, work on the scanned document.

It is far more practical to share a folder on the computer where the
scanner is connected. Scan the document from that computer into the shared
folder then get the document using any computer with access to the shared
folder.

That said, there are 3rd party software that does provide sharing of
scanners but they in my opinion are not worth the money because you still
need to walk back and forth to the scanner.

You should check the scanner manufacturer's software or 3rd-party software
which might provide such option.

Business-level networked ("shared") scanners provide an option to send a
scanned document as the .pdf attachment to any e-mail address; another
advanced option is sending the output directly to any suitable application,
and you walk to the scanner only once as you do it to pick up your printout
from shared printer.

Hi Scanners

Regular Scanners are Not Network Devices and can not be shared.

You need to buy a Scanner that is Network capable.

Brothers Brand has sub $200 All in One unit that includes a scanner and it is Network
enabled. Other Brands have similar Hardware. It is usually geared toward Office use and
thus it is more expensive than regular scanners.

There is software that can make a regular scanner Network able. Unfortunately it is
expensive to the extend that you are better of buying a New Network Capable scanner.
