How to setup a permiss LAN share network?

Hi all,

I try to using one Windows XP Pro. to setup a permission base file server
share under the LAN, not choose Windows Server is because we are small
company, user under 5.

I format a new NTFS partation on a logical driver E:\ and make a new folder
called "Account Department"

Later I do following step:

2. Go to user and group
3. Make two user, one is kei, one is kathy, kinson
4. Make a new group "CPAccount", and then add kei and kathy to this group
1. On the "Sharing" tab, I checked the "share this folder"
5. On the "Security" tab of Account Department" folder, I add the new
"CPAccount" group here and give it a full control permission
6. On the "Sharing" tab, I press the "Permission" button, and then remove
the everyone group, added the "CPAccount" group.

Ok, problems here, I go to other XP home workstation, connect the File
Server, it will not let me access the share resource, but if I add back the
"Everyone" group on the Share tab under the permission button, it will let me
accress and see the document .. and the non- CPAccount group user, kison also
can read the document and accross the resource too ..

I am wonder, the Account Department document is very important, not allow
non- CPAccount group user can read and accross the resource, how to setting
up is right?? I just only allow the CPAccount group user can read, full
control the doc, but user kinson can not see the resource and accross .....
remove the everyone group on the permissions button will not let the
CPAccount Group accress the resource too, whatever I had add this group here
....

Anyone can teach me step by step?? or have the detail document for reference
like this type of application?

thx

It sounds like you're still using Guest access, which won't necessarily have the
access that you need. Guest requires Everyone.

By default, XP Pro requires a matching, non-blank password on client and server.
And did you activate your users for network access? Not just local access?

Set up matching user accounts (with the same user name and password)
on all computers. For example, the user named "kei" must have the
same non-blank password on all computers.

Ron Lowe and I have written a web page with step-by-step instructions:

I think your basic issue here is that unless you specify otherwise, the
clients will try to use the local username and password to connect to the
server computer. If they match, no problem, but if they do not, then trouble.
The connection to the server doesn't have to use the same credentials as the
local username on each computer. You can connect with:

NET USE H: \\SERVER\SHARENAME /USER:Username Password

The other thing is, unless you have a very good understanding of
permissions, stick to using share permissions and leave the
filesystem-permissions at the default - The problem may be that there are
restrictive filesystem-permissions on the folder already.
