How to set up PDC

How do you set up a Windows XP Professional machine as a PDC, if this is
possible. Is there a tutorial on it somewhere? I would also like to know if
I could add XP Home machines to the domain (and how). I read on the internet
that this can be done, by giving their workgroup the same name as the domain,
but i won't be able to administer XP Home machines from a central location.

My set up is as follows:
2 XP Pro PCs
3 SP Home PCs
1 SNAP server

Would be ideal if all could be in same domain so i could restrict access,
but just getting the XP pro and server in a domain would be a start.

Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi, Isobel -

I'm afraid an XP Professional machine cannot act as a
domain conroller. You'll need a server OS like Windows
Server 2003 to perform that function.

Hope this helps -

OK, thanks for telling me.

Hi!

Yes, Win 2003 or Win2000 Server is needed.

But there are free oder less expensive possibilities, running unter
MacOS X or Linux, which offer you NT4-PDC-possibilities (even LDAP-Support).

But for a great ActiveDirectory-experience I suggest you to get WIndows
2000 Server oder 2003 Server - you can obtain an evaluation copy
directly from Microsoft if you are not sure, if you *really* need that
software.

Only a server OS can be a PDC; XP PRO is a client OS. So, you'll need
to get W2K3 server to create a domain.

XP HE cannot join a domain. It can access individual resources in a
domain, but that can be a PITA.
