Someone in my office customized the Insert Auto Text drop-down list (that
we use to insert text into headers and footers) on 1 computer (and then
left)! I need to get it back to the defaults of:

- PAGE -
Author, Page #, Date
Confidential, Page #, Date
Created by
Created on
Filename
Filename and path
Last printed
Last saved by
Page X of Y

I've gone into Tools, Templates and Add-ins, Organizer, Auto Text, but I
can't get anything to change. It'a a little tough to get help, because I
don't have Internet access at work.

If it is empty chances are that someone replaced normal.dot with a different
file. You can generate a new normal.dot by following the instructions at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm.

Thanks Suzanne. Actually, what someone had done was to delete all the
defaults and replace them with a list of employee's names, so that they could
insert their names into the footer. Apparently, he knew how to edit
normal.dot, but I never did find a way to open it without it opening as a
blank Word document. (Right-clicking and selecting OPEN did the same thing.)
And, it was unreadable when I sent it to Notepad. However, I was able to get
things back to "normal" by copying a good normal.dot onto a diskette and
copying it onto the computer with the bad one.

You can generate a fresh copy of Normal.dot just by renaming the existing
one.
