How to set first account set up as "limited"?

K

Ken the Technician

Hello, When I install a fresh copy of XP Professional onto a computer, the
setup process prompts for an Administrator password, which is optional. But
when the setup is complete, and after the first boot, I am prompted for at
least one account name; this is NOT optional, and I cannot skip by it. By
default, this account has administrative rights; I do NOT want this account
to have administrative rights; I want it to be limited. When I log in as
Administrator, and go to Control Panel/Users, the option to make this account
limited is greyed out; it only allows it to have administrative privileges.
I ONLY want the Administrator to be administrator! Is this possible? It
must be; does anyone out there know how to do this? Thanks, Ken The
Technician

Doesnt sound like a "clean" xp installation, sounds more like you reinstalled
xp thru windows explorer....Try installing xp by booting to xp cd,delete
partition,
create one,let xp format & install auto..This will eliminate youre account
problem(s)...

Answer is simple at start up press F8. Before windows loads.
Select Start in Safe mode enter Log on as administrator with your password
!!!...
If at setup You did not set Admin Password than at first boot User settings
will become full Admin.

You can go to settings control panel Computer Administration Local Computer
Security Administration and settings, than set new user set up account new
profile LIMITED use, Give it a name if you want Set Password or Not ?!! I
strongly suggest you do. Less likely hood of hacking in to you Computer From
remote admin or some so called help sites or ISP setup help provider when a
problem arises.

Than You can Disable account one or set to private files settings and place
a password on account user one please write it down and place it somewhere
for safe keeping.

So now you have a user who is #2 with a limited account privileges the #1
Use when disabled will not show up at the start screen after Windows XP is
loaded.

There restart computer to make all previous files accessible to the
Administrator only.
Also is You ever want to set a new user profile or Change Privileges user
rights or program usage you can go back as the Creator Owner Administrator to
do just such a thing.

Any Other thing I can advise You on Look for me on MSDN DEVELOPER Profiles

if you look than you see there is a solution to it not just a reformat and
reinstall or even tell him he could do a repair reinstall of XP Pro. Fix from
the CD.

Like it or not a short sarcastic comment is all you can give to a simle

Dear Zsholt,

My, thank you for making yourself so available. No doubt, you knew exactly
what I was asking about, and had the answer in your front pocket. To be
sure, I havent tried the whole process yet, but upon reading your response,
there is little doubt in my mind that it will work. I guess the big secret
here, the part that wasn't intuitive to me, was to go to the Computer
Management panel; why in God's name did they set that up to be able to be
done only there, as opposed to Control Panel/users?

(For the record, I believe that at login, you don't have to boot to Safe
Mode; I think that you can accomplish the same ends by hitting
Ctrl-Alt-Delete 2 times; this brings up a non-default login option; check it
out, to see what I mean)

Thank you, again,

You cannot set the first user account to Limited (or Standard) on a fresh
clean install of Windows XP. The technique is to create this user account
(which yes, will have administrative privileges) and then, since this is XP
Pro, finish the install and then log on as the built-in Administrator. From
this account (the built-in Administrator account), you can create and
manage all the other user accounts you need.

If you are trying to create an image to apply to many other machines, the
technique is to then set up this master computer exactly as you want. While
workable without, it is however best practice to create an additional user
account with administrative privileges (we normally call it "Tech" on XP
Pro boxen) protected with a strong password. Although not strictly
necessary if the built-in Administrator account isn't used, this account
gives some extra protection in case the built-in Administrator account
becomes corrupt or otherwise unusable.

(snip incorrect information - basically all of it)

There is no need to do any of what you suggest and there is no ability to
"press F8" while still in the XP installation routine. The user account
created after the built-in Administrator will be a "Computer Administrator"
in XP whether you set a password for the built-in Administrator or not.

I do not think anyone should take you up on your offer to "Guide any one in
the right direction With Microsoft Products [sic]". The information you
provided in this thread was wrong and anyone who actually posts his real
email address and telephone number on Usenet obviously doesn't understand
the computing world. I'm sorry if saying this hurts your feelings but then
you didn't hold back slamming computer techs, either.

Hi, I don't know if I walked on a flame war or if something else is going
on, but for sure, Zsholt's advice set me on the right track. Granted, it's
another example of Microsoft stupidity; why can't the accounts be managed
from Control Panel/Users, but they can be Computer Management/Local Users and
Groups/Users? Under the SAME LOGIN? Just something that I failed to look
at, and now that I know about it, it's one less thing that I'll have to worry
about. Thanks, Ken the Technician

You've gotten answers...
Maybe you'd like to automate everything and speed up things immensely?

Also look into imaging technologies.

I install Windows XP Professional *a lot* - and I am not prompted for
anything. I have different unattended setups - some with additional users
(administrators, non-administrators, whatever my need is) and some without
any additional users. I think if you look through the information above (in
the first two links especially) - you'll find yourself doing less sitting
around repeating the steps you have done a thousand times before and more
time doing other productive things. ;-)
