how to set DSL - 2000 Server with 4 PC's

P

P.Caero

I am trying to setup a small office network with some
security. I currently have all of the machines named and
in the same workgroup. A DSL Modem connects to - server
nic #1 and server nic #2 connected to the up link port on
my net gear 10/100 switch. the other 4 ports from the
switch then connect to - 3 win 2000 pro machines and 1 XP
Pro machine.

My goal is to configure the server as the internet
router with NIC 1 as the public side and NIC 2 as the
private intranet side for the workstations to be hidden
behind the server while enabling file sharing and internet
browsing throught the server. I think I should be setting
up the server with NAT, but can't get it to work. Can
anyone point me to a step by step guide. Thanks any help
would be much appreciated.

It really depends on how your server actually connects to the Internet.
Does your server NIC 1 have a real public IP address? If it does, you can
set up NAT on the Windows server to share the connection. If your server has
a private IP or is using PPPoE, it is not so straight forward. Some other
device is probably doing NAT for you already, and it is really just a matter
of getting the routing right.

Hi Bill,

First of all, Thanks for your advice. Basically, I am setting this up from scratch.
Regarding the internet IP address - I have the basic home user DSL modem service, in which I obtain my IP address automatically when connected to the internet.

this is how I am connected without the server:
( dsl modem )----- 4 port switch ------- ---- PC 1, PC2 etc (all nic cards) with the tcp/ip address set to be obtained automatically.

I can surf the web fine like this, but, I would like to configure the ( internet routing server with 2 nic cards) between the (dsl modem) and the 4 port switch. From there, I would like to have the PC's hidden behind the server's IP address. I hope that explains what I am trying to accomplish better. does this seem possible to you ? Thanks again for your advice!

Yo...

I would not advise you to share you internet conection
with your file server. Its too risky. Anyway, you can do
it by right clicking the NIC connection that goes to the
modem, going to Advanced tab and clicking Share Internet
Connection... If you enabled RAS, it will not work, then
you will need to use RAS NAT services and it a little more
complicated..

I would advise you to buy a small and cheap switch with
DSL router function. Maybe a Linksys one. They are very
simple to setup, have a basic firewall and you get file
service and internet access services separated.
