As I understand it OE is a part of IE and thus a part of the operating
system. As such, it keeps some processes running in the background even
if
the program hasn't been launched. Apparently its mail transport is one of
those. OE accommodates only one simple mail transport protocol. Outlook
on
the other hand must accommodate many different mail transports, many of
them
proprietary and complex, such as the client for Exchange Server. It will
not
launch any of its mail transports until the program itself is launched.
People migrating from OE to Outlook are frequently surprised that their
mail
is not sent in the background like it is with OE. Outlook is primarily a
business app, so most of its users keep it running while they're working
especially if they want their mail sent immediately.

Thanks Russ - I might just do that. Can I ask, since you don't use OE,
how
do you know it's running all the time? And presumably if it's running
all
the time as part of vanilla Xp install, here is the place to ask for
advice
on what happens to it when Outlook is installed and takes precedence as
e-mail client?
Any further thoughts most welcome!

:
Don't know. I never use OE. You can ask in an OE group.

Ah - thanks for that... so the splash screen when running it from
its
icon
is
a fake? Also, if it was actually running... then is it still
running
in
the
background now, or has the Outlook installation killed that? What
processes
does OE have running all the time?
Thanks
M
:
No. Both programs must be running to function. OE is always running
in
the
background.

I've just upgraded to Outlook 2003 from Outlook Express. Before
the
upgrade,
I could right click any object and select "mail to" from the
context
menu.
When I did this, OE used to then send the mail right away (once
I'd
put
the
recipient and any other info into the e-mail). In O 2003 all is
the
same,
save that the e-mail then sits in Outlook out-box until the next
time I
open
Outlook, when it gets sent. Is there a way of making Outlook
behave
like
OE
did and send immediately?
thanks
M
