how to see a hyperlink or an updated field

Since yesterday I keep seeing the field in its 'original' format. Instead of
seeing e.g. the page number I would get the whole merge field thing, the same
for hyperlinks, and I only get to see what I need when I click on "update
field" or "select hyperlink". the problem returns when I close and than
reopen a document!
this is driving me crazy! How do I solve this????
