How to retrieve the path to a picture linked to an external file?

I have a document full of pictures, some of which are linked to .jpg files on
the filesystem. I'd like to convert these links to picture objects, so I'd
like to paste the images themselves, but I don't know where I can find the
specific pictures. I have them all in a separate folder, but there are too
much of them to find them manually. Is there any way to display the link path
of a specific picture?

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to see the path and filename of the source if you
press Alt+F9 to toggle Field Code Display on. Embedded pictures will
have a field code that looks something like { EMBED ObjectType }.
Linked pictures will have a field code that looks something like { LINK
ApplicationName "path\filename" }. You can quickly convert a linked
object to an embedded object by selecting the link and pressing
Ctrl+Shift+F9.

Note, however, that you won't be able to see the field code if the picture
is wrapped. You must make it temporarily In Line With Text in order to see
the field code with Alt+F9. Also, if you have inserted a picture using the
"Link to File" option, the field code will be INCLUDEPICTURE.

Oh that's awesome, thanks. However, sometimes, when I press Ctrl+Shift+F9, it
displays a blank picture instead of the one needed. Other pictures are just
fine. What can I do about that?
By the way, are these 'tricks' documented somewhere? I mean a central place
where I can find stuff like this...

(Word 2007, 97-2003 compatibility mode)

Click on Office button | Word Options | Advanced, scroll down to the
"Show document content" section, uncheck the "Show picture placeholders"
box, check the "Show drawings and text boxes on screen" box, and click

Those options are already set the way you wrote, but I'm still experiencing
the problem with ca. one half of the pictures linked to the document :(

If you are working in Draft view, then switch to Print Layout view,
because objects that are formatted as something other than "inline with
text" are not visible in Draft view.

If the previous suggestion doesn't help, then try reducing or turning
off hardware acceleration in Start | Control Panel | Display | Settings
| Advanced | Troubleshoot. If this fixes the problem, then you might
want to check the website of the manufacturer of your video
card/graphics adapter to see if there is an updated driver available.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Meanwhile, I found a semi-solution:
right-click, edit field, uncheck "doc doesn't contein data" or something
similar, OK, then Ctrl+Shift+F9. This way, it works. The strange thing is
that sometimes there are incorrect paths and despite that, the linked picture
displays correctly... some of the problems were cause by that, and the other
ones could be eliminated with the workaround above.
Thanks for the help.

PS: I can't do anything with the video drivers, it's the most up-to-date
available (Catalyst 7.10) the only thing I could do is to abandon 3D
acceleration...

Note that Ctrl+Shift+F9 unlinks the picture and embeds it in the document.

In the Help topic "Keyboard shortcuts" all the shortcuts are listed. There's
a Help topic called "Lock or unlock a field," and there are Help topics on
specific fields, but there doesn't seem to be anything general about working
with fields.

Wow, that is what I needed. I want to link to pictures until I'm ready to
publish, and then change all the links to embedded. That will allow me to
break the master doc into sub documents & change a few pictures just before I
publish. I'd been looking all over for a way to do this. Thank you, Suzanne!
