How to retrieve a document?

I would like my application to retrieve a certain document
from certain directory in the server. How can that be
done? Any examples? Also, how to determine the total space
(the size) of the document?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you (Niel and Chris) for your quick response to my
rather stupid but important to me question.

I have not yet tried any of your suggestions (since I
haven't learn them yet, but soon will, due to the fact I
might need it). Anyway, I have experience only in
1) accessing local database via SQLCE
2) accessing server database via SQL2000

How is the three mentioned above affect the process? I
mean, since I didn't have any knowledge on how (the three
method) is done, I am curious about how it work and how it
is different from the 2 approach I used for database
(since I now look into file, not database).
