How to Retest Bad Sectors ($BADCLUS)

T

Tom Wells

I had a sector get a CRC error. I took a sector editor, wrote to the
sector and now it's fixed. How can I either get windows to retest the
cluster or how can I manually edit the $BADCLUS file record in the MFT
to get it to release it? Format is not an option. I realize this is an
academic question since we're only talking about 4k.

Just having fun with the file system,

Tomdon't think it's possible thru windows tool
There maybe a third party utility, but I don't know of one.

If you *really* know what you're doing, there's always dskprobe .
With that you can do anything.

PS I have the same problem and I've decided to live with it for now.

I'm willing to try dskprobe but the layouts of the FILE record in the
MFT aren't making enough sense. It's just for the academic challenge
(and some obsessive compulsive behavior). I've considered removing the
reference to the first cluster and then seeing of chkdsk will free it up
but I can't see how to do that.
