After virus atack by Swen.A@mm I could not use more
System Restore function in my WinXP. Is it possible to
restore "System Restore" without reinstall WindowsXP?

Hi,

Usually you disable it, reboot, then reenable it. Control Panel/system/SR
tab, "disable system restore on all drives".

I have the same problem. I ran the linked solution to no avail.

The exact error message is

"The procedure entry point RemoteAssitancePrepareSystemRestore could not be
located in the dynamic link library WINSTA.dll"

Any help would be appreciated.

Third time I've posted this tonight. However, you really shouldn't
hijack someone else's thread - he gave no indication of a winsta.dll
error message.

This issue can occur if there are corrupted restore points or some
related system files are missing. To troubleshoot this issue, let's go
through the following steps:

Part I. Disable and then re-enable the System Restore feature:
------------------------------------------
1. Click the Start menu -> Run. Type "sysdm.cpl" (Without quotation
marks) in the Open field. Click OK.
2. Click the "System Restore" tab.
3. Click to check the "Turn off System Restore on all drives" box, and
click OK.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Click the Start menu -> Run. Type "sysdm.cpl" (Without quotation
marks) in the Open field. Click OK.
6. On the "System Restore" tab, remove the check mark from the "Turn
off System Restore on all drives" box, and click OK.
7. Restart the computer again.
8. Check whether you can use the System Restore function.

Part II. If this issue persists, please perform the following steps to
repair the System Restore feature:
-----------------------------------------------
1. In My Computer, click the Tools menu -> Folder Options.
2. On the View tab, make sure to check the option "Hide extensions for
known file types".
3. Click OK.
4. Click the Start menu -> Run. Type "%windir%\inf" (Without quotation
marks) in the Open field. Click OK.
5. Locate and select the file "sr.inf". Right-click it and then click
Install.

Maureen, Thanks. Part II worked, to an extent. Part I cannot work because
there is no System Restore Tab on the system control panel after the Swen
virus is done doing its thing. However, after running Part II, I now have
the System Restore Tab, but the check box whether to enable or disable
System Restore is grayed out with the message that this button has been
disabled by Group Polices.

Obviously, something still is wrong. How do we fix this?

Ned

BTW, I think all of us that are trying to recover from the Swen virus will
need this solution.

If it has got into trouble, it is probably sensible to clear it out and
let it start clean too. System Restore. Check 'Disable System Restore,
and OK, reboot. Now have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden
files, and *not* Hide Protected mode ones and delete everything in the
System Volume Information folder on each drive

Start SR up again, and I suggest reviewing the settings for each drive.
There is not much point having it enabled on data drives, and on ones
with System or Programs I would reduce the space allotted if more than
say 1GB - I use 500MB, the minimum is 200 which will only handle maybe a
week of points. But the default of 12% of a drive seems too much for
its own good on modern large drives

Kelly, Thanks. I am probably not the only one suffering from the effects of
the Swen virus. Ned
