How to Restore Outlook 2002 Desktop Icon?

G

One of my family ran the Desktop Cleanup Wizard and removed the Outlook
desktop icon. How do I get it back? The "unused desktop shortcuts"
folder was deleted.

I already have the key mentioned in this article.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Deskto
p\NameSpace

2. Click Edit | Add Key and add the following key:
{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

What else can I do? As you seem to have guessed, I am running Windows
XP, but my question referred to Office 2002 (Office XP). The tip is for
Office 2003, which doesn't install a desktop icon for Outlook.

Minimize open apps so you can see your Desktop. Then click Start, Programs, click and drag Outlook icon to your Desktop and release the mouse. A shortcut will be created.

Yes, this will create a *shortcut* to Microsoft Outlook 2002, but I am
trying to restore the original desktop *icon*. When you right click the
original Outlook icon and choose Properties, it acts like the Mail icon
in control panel. When double-clicked, the icon opens Outlook.

this is the key used to restore the icon for all versions. Drag it from the
start menu to the desktop, it will have the shortcut icon but a right click
has properties (same as the start menu icon) and gets you into the profile
setup.

My start menu's Outlook icon does not have the Outlook properties. It
has "Internet Properties." Dragging the icon to the desktop does not
change this fact. Restoring the registry key did nothing at all.
Neither did the instructions on the MS Knowledge Base. In fact, the KB
article contained an error. It said to run "setup.exe," which does not
exist in my Office XP install folder or even on the original
installation disk.

Are you sure it's Outlook? Internet properties is on the MSN and IE browser
menu.

Yes, it is the Outlook Icon. But I've gotten past that now. I managed
to get a new copy of the Outlook icon by copying it from an account
which somehow still had it. However, the new icon doesn't work quite
right. When I right click the icon, it shows both the "Mail Setup -
Outlook" applet and regular shortcut properties. If I click the General
tab on the shortcut properties, the whole thing disappears, leaving only
the "Mail Setup - Outlook" applet.

Although this article seems to provide a solution, it actually didn't
work for me. In the first place, the link said to run
<drive>\setup.exe. There is no "setup.exe" on my Office XP CD. I tried
the ADDLOCAL="OUTLOOKNonBootFiles" switch with SETUPPRO.EXE, which is on
my copy of Office XP. This didn't work. So much for the Microsoft KB.

My Outlook icon also leads to "Internet Properties" when I right click it.
Never noticed it until you mentioned it. Must be what passes for normal
these days.

What I don't understand is why it's so important to have it back the way it
used to be. I mean, the shortcut launches Outlook, does it not? If you
need mail properties, use Control Panel.

True, I could get to mail properties through the control panel. But I
like being able to get mail properties through the desktop icon, and I
want to know how to accomplish this task. I like solving mysteries, and
this is one.

You must not have read the entire thread. I already have this key. Deleting and restoring this key does NOT restore the icon. The article is incorrect, at least in my case.
