How to Restore Open Dialog Box which is maximised to full screen

I have done something to Excel (2003) that means that the
Open Dialog Box is now maximised to full screen rather than opening as
a window on top of my workbook. This only affectd Excel- my other
Office applications still have a small Open Dialog Box window that sits
on top of the background document. How can I restore the Dialog Box
window to the smaller size?

Wow! I didn't even know that was possible.
Have you by any chance got something weird for your default file location
like maybe a shortcut to a folder and the shortcut is set to open maximised
orrrrraaaaahhhh..............?????????something a little bit different.

Try double clicking the header bar at the top.

Does nothing in mine, however, I'm using 2000. Does that make a
difference?

It's a Windows thing rather than an Excel thing, so I don't think so. Most
windows will maximise when you double click the title bar, including the
Excel open dialog, so I thought it was that.

Nice tip but only seems to work on program windows
and not on dialog boxes.

It'll work in xl2002+ for the file|open dialog.

Is the file|open dialog resizable in xl2k? IIRC, this feature was added in
xl2002.

It works on my Open dialog What about right-clicking the title bar and
selecting the options there?

Thanks Jeff - that solved it. I was thinking it would be something that
simple but of course there isn't the normal minimize/restore icons in
the top right corner of the Open Dialog Box

It only works with program windows on my setup. Dialog boxes I cant alter in
any way. Double clicking, click and drag on the bottom right
corner doesn't do anything, Interesting but I don't know if any of this
is helpful to the OP.
