How to restore *.MailDB files

HISTORY: Hard drive failure resulted in replacing new
drive and my paying someone to recover what files could
be recovered. Said files saved under an "old data"
folder.
THEN ...
I went looking for my e-mail "Folders on my Computer"
folders and found a "mail" folder with all of my old e-
mail folder titles each with a .MailDB ext. I can not
open any of these using anything and the MSN websites do
not recognize the extension either. WORDPAD and NOTEPAD
open them but with millions of zeros and lots of hidden
symbols such as 'paragraph return',etc.

1) how do I get these files opened? ...and then ...
2) how do I get these folders back as "Folders on my
Computer" with all my e-mail history still intact?
