how to restore/install default volume control and mixer in w2k pro

how does one restore or install the default sound devices
in win 2000 pro?
i.e the volume control and mixer.
I know in w98 you can do it from add/remove programs add windows
components - multimedia

but 2000 does not have that option

Can someone please help?

BTW

this is not as easy as it sounds
go ahead try it for yourself

TIA

Depends on your Sound Card to an extent.
Some are fancier than others
Find the one you have
Go to the Device Manager and nuke it
Get out the Drivers you got from the card or the box
Install the drivers
Or
Go to the manufacturers site and find yours and download the drivers
Install the drivers
boot to Plug and Pray
That don't work?
Go to the Device Manager again
Look if doesn't have any
Install it manually
(like 3.11 or 95a)

Thanks Don
its a sb16 pnp
but I tried various sound cards
and the drivers install fine

just no volume control or mixer
either the original files are corrupted or I removed them
when I wiped out the sound folder in device manager
I uninstalled everything

this whole thing started with a bluescreen at start-up telling me
my ks.dll was failing to load
so I manually removed that file
then started in safe mode and removed all entries in device manager
in the sound section

I normally know what not to do
this is a brain strain

all I really want to know is how
to reinstall the win2000 volume control sndvol32.exe
and the mixer

win95/98 and me have this option available in
add/remove progs add windows components!

why not win200 or xp?

3.11 and 95a standard didn't use plug & pray
You can try a "repair" install, but I doubt it finds screwed up sound card libraries.
I think you need to nuke all the library files for sound drivers
and install your OS over the top.
And Micro$oft should have a 16 bit Sound Blaster drivers

OK , so I can install 2k over the top like one can
with w98 by using the same dir name as the existing one?
