Can't seem to figure it out, especially since that computer is down. I know > scanreg /restore is for winme but what is it for xp? Thanks all.

Hi

There is no 'DOS' in XP. What problems are you having - including any error
messages that you are seeing?

Put your XP CD in the drive and boot with it. When you get to the choices select to go into the recovery console. This is a command line interface that emulates the old DOS environment. For the commands available to you simply type in help and hit enter and the list will come up. For parameters of the various commands, type in the command followed by a space and then /? and hit enter. For example. If you want to fix the Master Boot Record you type in fixmbr and hit enter. That does the default fix. If you want other or different paramters then type in fixmbr /? and hit enter and you will get a list of parameter commands. Good luck. {:~)

You can always dual-boot with XP and 98SE for the ultimate computer in
terms of backwards compatibility and support for new hardware and
software. Also, 98SE does have MS-DOS. :>

The equivalent to scanreg /restore (to restore the registry) is System
Restore. If you cannot boot normally, try booting with the F8 Key to
the menu and take
Safe Mode - Command Prompt only

At that give
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
which loads the graphical System restore interface to restore to an
earlier time.

If you cannot even get to the menu, try the method at

I have found that GoBack Deluxe by Roxio and now Symantec works even
better than XP system restore. You have a limit of 4 gigs. to set
aside as back-up information on each hard drive but it has worked
really well from my experience in using it. You can restore program
files as well as system files and so far it has not failed in
restoring an older configuration.
