I have windows XP PRO. MSIE 6 stopped working. ? ? It
will not boot. It gives error that it encountered
difficulty and must shut down. I think I need to
reinstall. How can I do that?. I don't wish to reinstall
whole OS. Only MSIE6 is busted. I wish to preserve my
whole complex XP install, desktop and so on. This is a
bought copy, so I have the original XP install disk.

I have had this since day one when XP was available. I
never had a problem like this before.

I had the same problem. I searched through the archives of this and related
news groups at Google,
and found a fix. The fix was: Go to Control Panel, open: Internet Options,
click the Advanced tab, and remove the check to the left of: Enable
third-party browser extensions, then click the Apply and OK buttons, and
then reboot. IE6 now opens, and runs fine. But, I sure would like to know
what caused the problem. Doing a repair install didn't fix a thing. But,
the above easy fix worked for me
