How to repair damaged or missing files in XP Home Edition?

Following a sudden power failure, some of the files in XP Home Edition on my
computer are likely to have got lost or damaged. It has not affected the
working of XP for the applications I am regularly using. But files in
various folders show numerical file names in place of meaningful
alphabetical names. Hence, my suspicion.

Is there any way of repairing the damaged and restoring the lost files, if
any? Would the various upgrades and security patches installed after the
initial installation of XP, have to be re-installed, if the repair has to be
done by re-installing XP with the installation disk? Would the drivers for
various devices and audio video capture applications also have to be
re-installed?

Hi

Type the following from Start>Run to see if it helps. You may need to have
your XP CD to hand:

sfc /scannow
