how to rename filetype in xp?

in 2000 (and earlier releases) one could just point to
file name (which showed file type as well) and right click
to get rename...you could rename the file name AND file
TYPE.

in XP i can't figure out how to rename file type? do i go
back to DOS (or what is now called cmd) to do this?

Works exactly the same way. Most likely you have your explorer view to not
show file extensions. In explorer: tools, folder options, view tab, uncheck:
hide extensions for known file types.
Now rename as normal.

XP is exactly the same as 95/NT4/98/2000/ME. On all of these you can do what you want IF you turn on Show File Extensions in Folder Options.

CMD is a win32 program not Dos.

for you files because i do see the file types...to the
right of the file names...in a different column that can't
be renamed? the extensions are not hidden!

Nope, running the full xp mode, themes, logons, xp start menu, xp explorer
views.
What exactly is the problem. You should be able to right click the file
choose rename and rename it, including the extension, just type it in. XP
may warn you about changing extensions, but that's about it.

how older windows worked, like how cmd works something
like old dos worked...

going back to 'classic' indeed makes file renaming work
just like the previous older window releases...but xp not
going back to the old classic style seems to only support
cmd rename for file types?!?!?!

In Windows XP double-click on My Computer.
In the My Computer window click Tools | Folder Options to
open the Folder Options window.
In the Folder Options window under Tasks select Use
Windows classic folders.
Click on the View tab in the Folder Options window and
under Advanced settings: select ([X]) or unselect ([ ])
the following settings:

[X]Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list
[X]Display the contents of system folders
[X]Display the full path in the address bar
[X]Display the full path in the title bar [optional]
[ ]Do not cache thumbnails
# Hidden files and folder

What exactly are you trying to do. Do you want to change the "file type
description"? Obviously you can't just turn a file into another type of
file, but you can alter the description.
Any explorer window - Tools - Folder Options - File Types.

You were given correct advice. What you are mistaking as the file
type "extension" is the file type column. You need to turn off the
"hide extension for know file types" check box as instructed.

Changing file type extensions can be dangerous to do, so make sure you
know what you are doing. You can easily confuse your computer if you
aren't careful; forget you changed the extension and you may never
figure out what you used to create the file in the first place.

the 'classic' setting solved the issue as posted earlier:

contrary to a lot of posts, as delivered, windows
xp 'explore' is NOT exactly like 98/2000/nt etc. you
have to set the 'classic' on to make it work like
98/2000/nt...

i just wanted to know of a 'usable' virgin XP,
not 'classic', way of doing it. ('classic' usually means
it might be going away with the next windows version and
i just wanted to see what it was that bill wanted us to
use, besides 'cmd renname'.)

i was renaming htm to html and other wierd tests for
software products...i rename type a lot when testing or
moving data about.

I'm still not sure what your talking about. Explorer works exactly the same
in xp in classic mode or xp mode and actually the olny difference between
classic and the xp look, is the theme that windows is using. There is a
classic theme and the new xp themes. These have *nothing* to do with
explorer and how it works. It just makes windows look different not act
different. Renaming as we all have said is exactly the same as its always
been. Why dont you post the exact steps your doing and the exact error
messages that come up and what exactly happens. If you can only rename files
with the classic theme enabled then you have something seriously wrong with
your windows installation. You should be able to reaname files and folders
in any mode, using any theme. The classic theme has nothing to do with it
and if it does you have problems.
