Dear MS Support,

When open my C drive, opening the -> Documents & Settings to change the name
displayed for my computer "User" (for example I need to change the name from
sherif to susan) I failed & I am always receiving the following error:
"sherif is a windows system folder and is required for windows to run
properly, it can not be moved or renamed"

So pls. advise how can i rename it to match with my need?
Thank you truly for your immediate reply & support.
Kind Regards
Sue

While this newsgroup is sponsored by Microsoft, it is not
operated by MS support staff. Just about all respondents
are volunteers who speak for themselves, not for Microsoft.

The folders you are talking about are profile folders. While
it is possible to rename them, I would not recommend it.
I suggest you tell us ***why*** you wish to rename them
and ***what*** you wish to achieve. Perhaps creating
a new profile folder under a different name, based on the
existing folder, might be the right solution for you.

Hi Susan,

You cannot just rename the folder. You must create a new user profile and
the copy the data from the old one. Here is a step by step article:

After you check all the settings or right in the new profile, you can just
remove the old on from Control panel/User accounts.

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed, even if the associated user account has been. So,
your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in
Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username
desired. You can then delete the old user account(s).
