When I run msconfig and select the Startup tab an item called netyi32 is listed.
I have deleted both the file this item refers to and its reference in the registry.
What else do I have to do to remove it from the Startup list?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Look at this article:

Most interest for you is the section "How to remove registry entries"

Right-click Start button, then click on "Open All Users" or Explore All
Users" in resulting menu. Delete the shortcut (should have a curved arrow
in lower-left corner of icon) to the unwanted item in the next window.

You could try Startup Control Panel at www.mlin.net - Its
freeware and enables you to remove startup items. The
program places an entry in Control Panel from where it
can be run.

I didn't absorb all the details, but since you pointed me to an article on changing the registry I thought I may
have missed something so did another registry search and found a reference I had missed previously
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\netyi32.exe
and deleted it. This did the trick and the item no longer appears on the startup tab in msconfig. Thanks for your help.

Thanks guys, but I've sorted it (see above reply to Peter Forster).

If you had unchecked it in msconfig, its data will have been moved from
the registry Run key to one of its own under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSconfig\startup reg

Delete that sub-key
