How to remove single icon from system tray AND keep the app running

Hi,

I searched Google, and there a LOADS of people who want to be able to
do this, but I didn't find a good solution.

I want to remove an icon from the system tray, and keep the application
running. I still want this application to autostart on reboot, and I
want the icon automatically hidden. I'd prefer to not have to an app
constantly running to accomplish this - but I'll settle for it. I don't
want the application that does this to have it's own icon in the system
tray. I don't otherwise want to modify the system tray in any way.

I don't want to use XP's hide option, as that puts an arrow in the
system tray so you can click it to look at the hidden icons.

Thanks for any help.

Right click the taskbar and choose Properties. On the Taskbar tab click
Customize.

If I right click in the system tray or in the taskbar, there is no
"Customize" (there is "Properties"). If you are talking about "Taskbar
and Start Menu Properties" -> "Hide Inactive Icons" -> Customize, I
said why I wasn't interested in that.

You do realize that neither Windows nor Mac OS provide a way for you to do
what you want... It's up to the software maker itself -- not the operating
system. This is because it would be risky to just hide the fact that a
program is running.

Some programs let you choose not to display them anywhere while they're
running. But it's up to the software maker. Have you asked the maker of the
program you want to hide about adding that ability?

Icons are placed in the system tray by the applications they
apply to. So for instance, if your video card place an icon
there, the way to stop it from displaying there will be in your
video settings somewhere. Same with the rest of them. Most,
not all, apps allow you to not display their icons in the sys
tray.
