How to remove old doc appearing on opening Word,instead of blank?

When I open Word, instead of a new blank document,ready for typing,I get a
document (a form letter) that I prepared months ago.The same thing happens
when I try to open 'new doc'.I have tried all sorts of variations of
clearing,deleting text and deleting format and saving.It does not work.
Any ideas how to restore my initial screen to a blank document?
 
Hi Marie, it sounds like you've written over your normal.dot file. Do a
search for normal.dot. Open it and remove all text and reset the formatting
(usually it's times new roman, 12 point). Save the file. There may be
another way to restore the normal.dot file that I'm not sure of, but this
should work too.
