How to remove old appointments from calendar in Outlook 2003

Hi there,
this is probably something trivial that I keep overlooking, but I dont find
a way to remove my old appointments let's say all appointments from before
jan 1st 2004, from my calendar in Outlook 2003.
Archiving them does not produce the desired result: all appointments are
still there.

Is there anyone out there who can help?

Change the calendar view to "By Categories" and then sort
by "start" ascending.

This will give yo a flat view of all the items in the
calendar and you can select theitems in the desired date
range and delete them.
