How to remove double line from document

Many of my documents and especially older ones I open have a double line as
though the equals key was continually pressed across page and stays just
below entered text. If I insert text from the clipboard yet another set of
lines appears after that. These lines show in print preview and print with
teh document.

I am not sure just which demon I have angered but would certainly be happy
to appease him.

Any solutions would be really neat.
