Download the latest version of Lavasoft's Adaware and update the reference
file in it. Restart your pc and hold down the F8 key before it starts
loading Windows XP. Choose safe mode NO networking. Run Adaware while in
safe mode. Also after that download the trial of Webroot's Spysweeper. It
may find a few extra things but do run Adaware in safe mode.

Also: do a search for a file named Twain or twaintec on your harddrive (just
type in twain in the file search thing) and one named mxtarget. delete both
of those while not connected to the internet if you have them.

Umm, isn't that likely to trash anything that used twain?

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter,
Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately
(but without understanding the consequences) installed, two products
that are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of
scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search &
Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions.
It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your
system against most future intrusions. I use both and generally
perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:

more than likely no programs use anything named twain. Twain- tech is the
file that the vx2 spyware program plants on your hard drive. It's very hard
to remove vx2. All files associated with it must be removed and it will hide
them in legitimate program files. Removing it will not at all effect those
programs.

Try AdAware, which is the best of the adware removers.

Seems to me your real problem is that your computer is unsafe, and
you are "getting" new adware as fast as you clean the old adware
off. You should look into changing the setup on your computer to
prevent automatic installation of programs. You are running a
firewall, I hope? If not, get one immediately. ZoneAlarm is good
because it is very simple, yet effective at blocking unwanted
transmissions between the Internet and your computer.

Go to PCworld.com and then downloads...get latest
versions of both spybot and Ad-aware. check for and
download updates. Use Spybot to immunize your system. Run
both programs and be sure when Ad-Aware displays the
problems you right click somewhere on the names
and "select all" then click finish. Check for updates
often. Use Norton antivirus often and check for updates.
Thes programs will not remove all spyware or adware. I've
found in Norton it displays delete failed sometimes. You
might have to use search to find thefiles and delete them
yourself. If any of this seems like a lot of work, it is.
Anytime you go online, files are bound to make their way
into your computer. Anytime you accept anything for free,
it comes with this stuff. Nothings free. Update and clean
often. That's the best and eaasiest thing to do.
