How to reinstall Notepad

J

Jim Abraham

I recently got a virus that infected notepad. I had to
delete notepad to get rid of the virus. Now I need to know
how to get notepad back. Windows XP came pre-installed on
my Dell so I did not get an XP installation disk. I
appears that notepad is not available for download here a
Microsoft.com. What am I to do?

Thanks,

Jim

Although Windows came preinstalled on your Dell, Dell includes a Windows XP
OEM CD. It should have been included in the box with the other Dell CDs
(drivers/software etc.). If it's Windows XP Home edition, the CD will be
purple, and labeled Operating System. If it was not sent with your system,
get with Dell Customer support, and inform them that the CD wasn't in the
box. I had ordered a Dell system with an upgrade for RealOne Player. Dell
forgot to put the CD in the box when the system was shipped. If I ever have
to reinstall RealOne, I'd need that CD. I phoned Customer Support, and
there was no problem having the missing CD sent. Once you have the Dell
Windows XP OEM CD, go to:

http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?dn=1056993

and follow the walkthrough for a Windows XP Repair Install using a Dell
Windows XP OEM CD.

Note: The Dell Windows XP OEM CDs are sent in a variety of colors, yours
might not be purple. The one sent with my Dell Dimension 2400 was purple.

I should probably mention that notepad works when I use
the 'run' command, but if I click on a notepad document to
open it I get error saying "Windows cannot find
notepad.exe"

On my XP Home there are 2 instances of NOTEPAD.EXE located at:
C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE
and
C:\WNDOWS\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE

they appear to be the same (version 5.1.2600.0)

the default for running a '.txt' file is the one at
C:\Windows\system32\notepad.exe.

perhaps that is the one you deleted, in which case you might try copying the
one from c:\windows\notepad.exe
(you should probably check that version is 5.1.2600.0 first).
