How to recover security identifiers from a previous Windows XP installation

I have a Compaq presario (which I use at home) on which
the OS is Windows XP professional. The file system of the
hard disk is NTFS. I had folders which were not
accessible to others using my machine.

Because of some trouble, I had to reinstall the OS. After
reinstallation, I am not able to access my files and
folders. I am able to see the folder, but cannot access
the folder.

Can I map the old security ID to my present security id?
Will this solve my problem?
