How to recover from a corrupted boot loader?

My boot loader and/or partition table has become corrupted and I end up with a "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}" message. Prior to the BSOD, the loader tells me that Autocheck program is not found and is being skipped.

How can I recover from this without reloading XP and losing all my applications, configurations and data??

I have XP Pro on a Toshiba Satellite laptop.
