how to recover administrator password??

Hi guys,

following a suggestion described earlier in this ng about
making tv tuner cards work in media center I need
to change a setting under computeradministration/services....

I need to make the logon user from "local service" to mine
which is administrator.....

But when I restart mediacenter receiver service it says that
not able to start program because of logon problems??

When I installed vista I didn´t create more userprofiles...I only made
an administrator account with the name "MIKE" and as far as I can remember
I didn´t make a password...but just clicked "okay"....

When I tried to change the thing mentioned above..I didn´t write a password
just my name and the setup allowed it....but as it asked for logon
troubles...I
tried again using my standard password (I use on most my things)
and it still says logon trubles when restarting media center service....

Now my question is....If I, by some perverted reason, typed a password
when installing and creating my administrator account and now need to use
it...
how do I "find" it????

Regards Mike

I'd try repeating your experiment, after you've set up a password for your
account via 'Control Panel > User Accounts'. It's possible that trying to
have the service log on using different credentials will only work, if a
non-blank password exists for the account. Worth a try.

Yeah thanks Jon,
but if I create a password...doesn´t meen that I need to
log on everytime I turn the computer on???

I hated it with win xp and I hate it with vista.....I absolute don´t
want a logon screen for start using my pc...
I want to push the powerbutton and the next time I gaze at the screen
....I should see the desktop and not a userprofile to be clicked on to
continuing
starting the pc...

No, not at all.

Once you've set up your password, you can run this command

Start (> Run ) > control userpasswords2

Then uncheck the 'Users must enter a password.....' and click apply

You'll then get a prompt about having a user automatically log on, and you
enter your name / password there.

When you restart it will automatically log into that account

There are several Linux Live CDs which will allow you to reset the admin
password - in particular, see 'Knoppix Hacks' by O-Reilly.

There is an account with the name 'administrator' it is an administrator
account but you don't see it unless you restart in an maintenance mode, and
then only if there are NO other administrator accounts.

Your account 'MIKE' is (probably) an administrator account (not THE
administrator account).
On XP I found that trying to start a service using an account that does not
have a password simply would not work, the account had to have a password,
don't know if that held over to vista however.

Assuming your account does not have a password and you want to use it to
start a service as 'you' I think you will need to add a password to your
account.

(Control panel - User accounts to get started).
