how to record a conversation?

I talk to my relatives back home on computer. I tried to record the
converstion by starting sound recorder and pressing red 'RECORD' button as
converstion starts but when I play back it I only can hear background noise.
what could be the problem?
 
I was more than a little surprised to hear the following from "noname"

Check the device you're recording from under

Edit > Audio Properties
