How to reactivate XP with a different product key?

Can I reactivate a machine running XP Pro with a different
product key, without reinstalling the OS? I have two
scenarios where that would be useful:

1. Machine is running retail copy. I acquired an Action
Pack subscription, and would like to use one of its
licenses, so the retail copy would then be available
for use on another computer.

2. Machine is running MSDN copy. I want to use it in
production, with a retail or Action Pack license.

No. Windows XP Product Keys only work with the corresponding
installation CD. Retail Product Keys only work with retail CDs, etc.
You cannot perform a Product Key switch-a-roo!

Stewart;
Not exactly.
Assuming in all cases they are all Windows XP Pro or all Windows XP
Home.

You can perform a Repair Installation using the new CD and new Product
Key.
Repair Installation:

Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,

Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.
