Hi all,

I'm trying desperately to help my niece, who has a
practically new computer that was unfortunately infected
with Sasser. We've gotten the worm off of her machine, and
Norton is updated. However, her performance is still
awful, as bad as when she had the virus, and her technical
support person told her she would need to re-install XP to
correct that.

My question is twofold: First, does that seem a reasonable
action, and two, if we do re-install Windows XP, do we
need to remove it first, or install over it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably don't need to reinstall XP, but it would take some time to
figure out what performance problems you're having and how to fix each
one individually. You might learning more that way, even though it will
be more frustarating.

The "simpler" way would be to reinstall. This is generally preferred by
vendors, because then they don't have to deal with any actual problems!

However, before you let them convince you into doing that, make sure you
have backups of all your data. Consider copying license keys, codes,
email, settings, files, etc. Make sure you don't lose any data when you
re-install XP.

Read up on XP re-installation. There's "in-place" install and then
there's a clean install. MS's web site is good for info.

To try to save any info on the machine try doing a repair install first.
Boot using the XP CD and when prompted, select to do a repair installation.

If that doesn't work then you'll have to do a fresh install.

Hi

Try a 'Repair' install. The files, programs and settings should remain
intact, but you may like to backup any valuable data files beforehand:
