How to re enable text subtitution (Deleting hightligted text)

Hi i have seen this in a lot of instalations in serveral machines after a
while i cannot delete highligted text using the backspace, only de supr
button, and when i try to remplace some highligted text whit some tiping, te
texts gets un highligthed and the cursor fills up the space before the text
that was suppose to be deleted. This is quite anoying
 
On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, check the box for "Typing replaces
selection" (Backspace is considered "typing").
