How can I put program icons into the system tray/taskbar (in the area near
the clock and audio icons)?

Right click the taskbar, select toolbars..quick
launch...then just right click and drag icons there and use
copy here.

I don't want to put them into the quick launch area, I want to put them into
the system tray next to the clock!

Why? That is the notification area used by Windows to tell you when certain
programs are running in the background (if the developer has designed the
program to place an icon there). They are programs and services "at the
ready." Even if you could, just putting an icon there will not run it's
program in the background.

The Quick Launch Toolbar is the place for programs you want to run "from
scratch" without having to minimize your windows to get to the desktop or
call from the All Programs menu. You cannot send an icon of your choosing
to the notification area. You can change settings on some of the programs
that do appear in the notification area so that their icons do not appear
there (such as the volume control icon). That does not, however, close the
program or service.

Items in Systray. Leaving aside you can click on each to find out what
they are, are they listed anywhere?
