How to open Excel file without Excel?

My daughter e-mailed me a spreadsheet in Excel but I don't
have Excel resident on my home PC. I have Windows 98 sysm
and it's related programming (Microsoft Works, Money, etc.
etc.) Is there any way to open this spreadsheet in
another program or convert the spreadsheet into a readable
format? Is it possible I have Excel on my system but
don't know it?

If all you want to do is view the file, you could use the free viewer from MS:
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx

If you double click the file your daughter sent you and if the operating
system, i.e., Windows 98, knows how to open the file it will select the
appropriate program.

Otherwise, your alternatives are (a) purchase XL -- $$, (b) download the
XL viewer from the MS web site -- a fair sized download, (c) download
Open Office -- a biiiig download, (d) have your daughter send you the
file in some other format.
