Same goes for the new US Ambassador to the Great White, eh! ;-) He
went to the Bush school of geography.

He'll learn.

The first action of a previous US Ambassador to Canada was to throw a
party to celebrate his new post. He stored the several cases of beer he
bought for the party in the garage. They froze and he had to buy more
beer to replace the collection of broken glass and ice hes was confronted
with.

He has been quoted as saying later, "Canada is the only country I have
been in where you have to store your beer in the fridge to keep it warm."

But he figures he can
build me a topnotch computer with a DVD writer even, for about $800, which
is a damned good price considering our dollar vs. yours.

You need a new large screen monitor??? $800 Canadian = $652 US which
sems awfully high to me. I've seen prices of about $350 at custom
computer shops around here. And guys that build and sell new "low end"
machines with AMD cpus are selling them for less that what you can
build them yourself for ... $200. But not with a monitor. Dunno what
you mean by "topnotch". The $200 machines just have 256 meg RAM
and 1.6 ghz cpus, so they aren't the fasted kid on the block. But who
needs the fastest for a "mom and pop" home computer?

I'm running Win 2K Pro (it came with the machines) on a couple of
these "low end" machines, and they are quite nice. They boot up and
shut down quickly, and Win 2K is quite popular among some geeks who
claim it's the best Windows OS you can use. It certainly isn't a "cure
all" for problems users have as can be seen on Windows 2K newsgroups.
Users have problems of one kind or another on all OS.

Which brings me to the question of why you want to "upgrade"?
If Win ME works for you, the worst thing you can do is "fix it" :)
My wife Peg is still happily using Win ME on our Hp Pavilion and
not have any problems. It has a 900 mhz Intel PIII with only
128 meg RAM and it's quite fast and nice with our DSL service.
No reason to ever downgrade to XP that I can see :)

now the handling looks right with the reposting SIGs with your OE. No
more SIG quotings anymore :) Fine. THX to OE quotefix as Beauregard
mentioned?
Nope!! Just removed the sigs by highlighting and deleting. (G)

Not sure if I will upgrade the Monitor.....this one does the job quite well
and I think it is 17". Samsung one, anyway. But those flat ones are rather
nice.

True.....I fixed up a Win2K computer out in Vancouver and wasn't impressed
by it at all. Nor the 2K news groups. Got one of the MS MVP's in England
to help me out with it. Then the owner returned from holiday and put XP on
it......aarrgghh!!

I am finding that more and more programs won't work with ME. But it runs
fine. However, I had a ****load of XP folders on the HD from the two failed
upgrades. Deleted most of them, but it is rather a bit of a hybrid
machine. Not to mention, I have had a free XP Home sitting here for over 2
years, which I would like to try. I will still use this computer as well, I
think. But it would be nice to have one that will run the programs I want
to put on here.

Plus my CD burner is broken and I may replace it, or just network and go
with the DVD burner on the XP machine. Not sure until I talk to Willy and
see what he advises. On the personal side, I just had to replace the roof
and next on the list is the furnace.....so I figured I would spend some
money on me for a change, lol.

Really? Like which? Are they worth it? Can't you find equivalents?

Never ran into that issue.

Hi Art.....give me a day or so to recall, grin. Photoshop & Illustrator
being two of them. I don't use them, but when my graphic artist daughter
visits, she needs those to do the editing she wanted to do. Couldn't use
the trials and she was not impressed with PaintShop Pro.

However....there was one the other day that surprised me and damned if I can
remember which one it was. Besides this computer getting old.....so am I!!
The memory is the first to go (or could that be the body, grin).

Anyway.....my CD/RW is not working at the moment, and I have a lot of
redundant XP folders on here, which are not causing a problem. Zone Alarm
keeps giving me errors at shutdown which are also not a problem.....my
printer doesn't load properly every 5th boot (Epson R-200) and a myriad of
little things.

I will reinstall ZAPro and Epson and see if that fixes those two. But if I
have to replace the motherboard or BIOS, it is simply not worth the money.
I can get a new CD/RW.....but again, is it better to just buy a newer
computer?? I don't have your expertise in building them.

Cheers....Heather

And that is putting it mildly!!!! A lot of cursing here for 24 hours as it
crashed continually!! Thanks to Noel Paton and Willy the tech.....they
figured it out. With help from a 52 page Everest report. 3 different dates
for the BIOS.

Cheers....Heather

Ha! Just as I suspected. You're just bored with your old PC and you
have money to waste :)

Another minor, easily fixed item.
Zone Alarm
keeps giving me errors at shutdown which are also not a problem.....my

It's people like you that have kept me in cheap PCs for years. I got
Peg's Pavilion for only $150 a few years back off some people who
were having problems with it.
I will reinstall ZAPro and Epson and see if that fixes those two. But if I
have to replace the motherboard or BIOS, it is simply not worth the money.

Motherboard or BIOS? What makes you think they need replacing, fer
gawd's sake?
I can get a new CD/RW

For about $35 here.
.....but again, is it better to just buy a newer
computer??

See what I mean? No logic. Just emotion. You're bored with your
old PC and rather than put the small amount of money, and larger
amounts of time and effort into fixing it, you'd rather give it away
to someone like me.
I don't have your expertise in building them.

I don't build them either. As I said, I couldn't build one for as
little money as I can buy them.
Cheers....Heather

Cheers :)

I'm just pulling your leg to some extent. I certainly know
the feeling. It was time for me recently to get some brand new
hardware as well. Got tired of fiddling with some old junkers
I had been picking up for nothing. And two hard drives in my
collection of spare drives tested as going sour by utils from
the h.d. vendors.

But when it comes to Windows, I certainly find no need for
the latest and greatest from MS.

Nah......I never told you the long saga of my attempt to upgrade to XP and
the disastrous results. Now THAT sorting out took a lot of thought.
Tell her bring her laptop :)

Hasn't got one......she has two older Macs tho.
Minor item.

True......about $35 Cdn as well. I will probably put a new one in.
money.

Motherboard or BIOS? What makes you think they need replacing, fer

The BIOS is 5 years older than the computer which I paid big dollars for.
It will not support a second HD or XP. I wanted to simply dual boot, but
that was not possible.

Nope.....you forget how frugal I am. Not about to give this away. However,
I do have a Compaq 2200 sitting here behind me that I might let you have,
grin. Only ever owned 2 computers in 9 years.

Yep....I figured you were doing that. And yes, I admit to a certain amount
of boredom.....time for newer stuff. Totally ticked off that I paid a lot
of dollars for this computer and the *innards* were substandard. Took a lot
of digging to find that out tho. Still haven't phoned MDG to complain, but
OTOH, not about to deal with them again.
But when it comes to Windows, I certainly find no need for
the latest and greatest from MS.

Mine was free, so figured I might as well dual boot. But I would have
upgraded eventually. This WinME O/S has served me well for 4.5 years. Not
about to junk it. Will use it as a backup for the new one.

thought I'd give it a good try and learn something about the NT
based OS.
dual boot.

That I wouldn't do. Much better to have separate machines with the
separate OS IMO. Also, doing a upgrade type install over a legacy OS
isn't a good idea. Best to do a fresh install on a freshly formatted
and partitioned drive.

Having it as a backup _machine_ (and not just OS) would be better
IMO, if you have room in the house, and a spare monitor.

At the time, the Upgrade Advisor had some things to remove or change, but of
course didn't detect the old parts. I have *never* reformatted a computer
and wouldn't do it on this one until I have all the bits and pieces
transferred over......and yes, it is fully backed up onto CD's. But there
is always something one forgets to back up.....8-((

Yes.....I have room in this office and would use it as a backup Machine.
Didn't mean the O/S. Ron will never, ever try to use a computer, which is a
shame, but c'est la vie.

Hey....I like that!! And yes, it is so true. Doesn't it amaze you when
people say....."I never realized you were THAT OLD".....we get that all the
time. Love it. Don't feel THAT OLD, grin. (assuming, of course, that
folks say that to you, old guy....lol)

Something I noticed.....since we are now in the latter half of our lives,
doesn't the time just whiz by?? Even when you are retired? Where in hell
do the weeks and months go. When we were 20, they inched along.....now they
are doing 120 mph.

Of course. Happens to all of us. Time to discard the old bod soon.
Seems right and natural. Glad I made it to that point. So many things
give me a "been there and done that" feeling now. It's time to
smell the roses. Luxuriate in the things that matter.

Good luck. I work for the Government as an Email administrator and
email ISPs that give us the biggest headaches as far as Viruses. We
get, on average, about 2000 Virus infected emails/day. Hell, we are
still getting Swen and Netsky viruses. Heck, the other day we got
someone sending us a freaking swen.a virus! WTF? Its so last year!
