how to name files using numbers

Guest

I just upgraded from Win98SE and now have a problem with naming files. I do design, so I name a lot of files with numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). I also use a Photoshop program to automate the process of presenting designs to clients, and in order to make sure that the files are presented in the correct order, I usually name them 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, .... 10, 11, 12...etc.

Now that I've upgraded, Windows will not let me name files even using the 01, 02, 03 structure - I have to include a letter, which won't look right to the client. In addition, because Win 2000 doesn't seem to sort the numbers in order, the numbers are all out of order. Obviously, I can present this to clients this way.

I need to know what I need to change so that I can go back to naming files using numbers, and how to get Windows to put these in the correct order. Please help! Thanks!

- Open Windows Explorer
- Click File | New
- Click "Text Document"
- Type 01.txt
- Press [Enter]

What is the error ?

Thanks for your reply.

I could do what you suggested (no error message, named the file as 01.txt), so I went back and tried to rename the files I originally had a problem with. I STILL can't name these 01, etc. These files are jpg files (sometimes eps, too) - would that have any impact? Thanks for your help!

Are there other files in this folder with the same name? I am afraid we
would need more details to assist. There should be no issues naming a file
with numbers only.

Hi,

No other files exist in this folder with this name. In fact, I had to do a "go around" to get it out to the client so I named each file "A," "B" etc. This won't work in the long term, because a lot of times we have more than 26 jpgs or eps files. That's why we went to the numbering system...so clients could easily identify which picture they were looking at. While I had Win98 on my machine, I had to number images 1-9 as "01," "02," etc., so the jgps would be put in the correct order.

Call me crazy, but I think it has to do with the files being jpgs and of course I don't know how to fix. This is a major issue for us, so your help will be much appreciated!

Ok so what is the exact error you get when you try to name a file 01.jpg
etc? Can you in fact rename this same file 01.txt if you can't name it
01.jpg? Also are you renaming this file through Explorer or some program?
And finally can you reproduce this problem on another WIndows 2000 or
WIndows XP machine?

Hi

I can't believe this - it is working partially now. can rename when I open up the folder from the desktop, but not when I use the numbers keypad in Explorer - I get the error message "must type file name." I think the problem is that Explorer isn't recognizing numbers I punch in using the numbers keypad on my keyboard - if I use the numbers above the letters, it works (just figured this out). Also had a problem saving jpg attachments designers sent in last week if they numbered them 1.jpg, etc. I typically do a save as to a folder on my computer when I receive email attachments. I don't remember the error message, and I deleted the files that I received last week that had the problem

I haven't checked if this is a problem on another computer since we seem to be narrowing the problem down. I can do that if needed, though. Thanks for your help - this is a peculiar one
