How can the Documents and Settings folder be moved or set to another
drive?

I want it that way so that using a Recovery Tool like Acronis or Ghost
to restore or corrupted system does not destroy user settings and data.

Is there some registry hack to do it that way?

No. At install time you can redirect the "Profiles" folder to a different
drive, but after install, an attempt to change its location to another drive
will result in MANY things not working as there may be literally hundreds of
settings in the registry referencing its location.

The supported way of handling this type of problem would be using a backup
application to backup and restore user data prior to an image restore. In
the same way, an image restore is only as good as the contents of the drive
at capture. Anything including applications and data added after the image
capture would be lost on restore.

Actually in WIN XP there is a pretty easy option, although apparently
unknown one. Right click on the 'My Documents' icon and the n select
properties. Then select the Move button. It will then ask you where to put
your files. I put my in a seperate partition or hard drive so when i reformat
C:\ I dont lose my files. It will update the current 'My Documents' shortcut
and then move all the current folders and files to the new location you
selected. This is also a nice option if you want to store all data on a
seperate network drive like a file server.

The My Documents folder is only one of a number of folders in the
Documents and Settings folder for a user.

Will this option also move the other rest of the folders such as
Desktop etc to the new location?

For you personal file the best way is to login as a different
administrator privileges then copy all the files located the
c:\Documents and Settings\User to the root directory of the partition
set for data. After this rename c:\Documents and Settings\User to
c:\Documents and Settings\UserBAK and go to the control panel
administrative tools then Computer management and go to the disk
management section, select the data partition and ADD a partition name
mounting the partition as a directory c:\Documents and Settings\User.
This is the simple way I found and everything is move to the data
partition. By the way I also have this done to the Program Files
directory.
