How to mark mail for deletion on a date and be prompted

Very often a mail received or sent has significance only for a few days. Say
there is a mail regarding a programme after 4 days. After the programme day
is over, mail is not relevant any more. Is there a way of marking such mails
in outlook so that we get a prompt for deleting them after expiry of that
date.

You can set an expire date, either using rules or manually in the message
options.

I see how to set expire date manually on the message. I don't see anywhere
in the Rules dialogs that allow me to expire. Will you please provide some
detail how to do this via Rules.

Thank you.

What is your goal? Perhaps the expiration date is not the best way to
achieve what you want, but until we know what that is, we can only
speculate.

There are some messages from specific senders or with specific subject, that
i only want to stay in my Inbox for a certain number of days, then I want it
deleted automatically. I realize that I could move it to a different folder
with archive/delete set up after n days, but I really want the message left
in my Inbox.

Thanks.

Autoarchive can delete instead of move, but I don't think you can tell it to
act upon specific messages.

Off hand, I can't think of how you can achieve your exact goals, unless a
third-party rules processor can do it.

I know this is old, but it's the only relevent item my search turned up.

I would also like to know to set an expiration date via rules. For example,
messages to AllStaff with "dentist appointment" in subject line expire
tomorrow. The purpose is so that I can refer to the message today if needed
(such as to see when the person is expected back in the office), but tomorrow
when the message no longer applies, I have an easy way of seeing that I can
safely delete it now. I don't want it to automatically delete (just in case
the rule captured something unexpected), just show as expired (font = gray
strikethrough).

I can not find this in the Rules wizard. I am using Outlook Professional
Edition 2003, v 11.6568.6562 SP2 with Windows XP 2002 SP2.

Thanks for any help.

There is no rule you can create for this but you can create a rule that
assigns it to the Category "Expired".
Then create an Automatic Formatting rule with a condition that when the
message is receive on or before yesterday and when assigned to the Expired
category it should show up in gray and with strikeout effect.
