Yes, you can. It depends on what operating system your host runs, and they
might offer a solution to suit you themselves.

If your site is on Windows server, this might help
http://www.murraywebs.com/faq.asp?ID=13 or you can use the
..htaccess/.htpasswd method on Linux/Unix. (search google for these terms and
what they do and how to use them - your host might allow these also, or have
some other method of protecting file & folders).
