How to make 36 page membership directory

I am trying to make a 36 page alphabetical church directory in Word. I have
a data base in Excel that I would like to try and mail merge into the
directory. Does anyone know how to do this?
 
You can use mailmerge: read help or Google on creating a catalog (the only
difference between this and other forms of mailmerge is that you have
multiple records per page, instead of a new document for each record).

But if it's just a case of formatting the list it might be adequate and
simple just to copy the data in Excel, paste into Word, and format the
resulting table.
