How to lost the dog and search assistant?

I was told that you could get rid of this piece of hyper annoying rubbish
from inside Word XP, as the normal Windows cannot do it. Can someone tell me
exactly how to kill it off please, before I lose my temper with it? :)

First time it comes up in WinXP, I just picked "Don't show this again" or
"Turn off assistant" (I forget the wording, it's been so long since I've
seen it.) Never came back.

You were told wrong. Click Start, Search, Change Preferences and then click
"without an animated screen character".

Open search. right side, toward the bottom, click on "CHANGE Preferences"
and pick the one that says "Without an animated screen character"

As usual, when all else fails, follow instructions.

Also, you can just right click on the damn dog. You'll get a menu of options to switch to another (most look even worse!) animated character, or NO CHARACTER! The dog just walks off into the sunset. You also get the option to make him do a trick. I made him do a couple of tricks before I sent him away.
