how to list static WINS mappings from a WINS server?

How do you see any static mappings that may have been created on a
Windows2000 sp4 server machine that is running WINS?

You can use the wins Management Console to view active registrations for all
wins servers and it will list static records in the fifth column I believe.
The columns are sortable if you click the column heading which can be
helpful if you have a large amount of records. --- Steve

Thanks Steve... I had to figure out that I could put a '*' in the Find By
Name search to get *all* the WINS registrations. I have not had much reason
in the past to be in the WINS console.

Looking at the WINS registrations brings up a couple questions that you
could probably answer:

1) The "[20h] File Server" record Type. What exactly does that specify? For
example, does an entry of this type mean that the client machine just has MS
File and Print Sharing installed and running? Or does it mean the client has
MS File and Print Sharing installed, running AND has defined file shares? or
printer shares?

2) strange entry: I have a "[1CH] Domain Controller" entry for my
workstation's IP address which is not a domain controller? the name is
INet~Services? do you know why? There are other machines on the network that
are running IIS that don't have this entry... why the INet~Services name?

any more info is even 'more' appreciated than the last!

thanks once again Steve.

The 20h just means that file and print sharing is installed. Of course
hidden administrative shares are created by default but it does not mean
that there are other non default shares enabled on the computer.

As far as [1CH] Domain Controller being on a workstation, I don't know why
that would happen and sounds weird. Make sure that is not a static entry.
You could delta/tombstone it and then run nbtstat -RR on that computer to
see if it appears again and use nbtstat -n to see if the computer reports
that name as being registered, though I don't know why it would do that
offhand. -- Steve
