How to kill an unkillable file

I had a desktop icon of 0 kbs (an aborted bat file) that would not die
despite trying to delete it in XP, safe mode and using the recovery console.
The disk is NTFS and while there are easily found utilities to read NTFS
from DOS/Win9x boot disks they do not allow deletion of files (probably
Microsoft makes those utilities nearly impossible to find because it would
show how completely insecure WinXP really is). However I found an obscure
utility called Delinvfile from www.purgeie.com that finally exorcised the
demon file from within XP. This may be useful for someone in the future . .

Hi,

If it ever happens again, see if this helps:

Start/Run/Regedit: Remove Desktop Icons
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

Another program I like to delete those pesky 0byte files is Eraser 5.x. It
is a prog. that allows secure deletion by over-writing, and can override
system settings often.
